Hi - June 2024
This album twas' my first foray into music. Ever. Bisexual toilet for sandwich girls was both
the first time i made anything musical (aside from band class but thats just reading shhet music),
and the first time i ever used a DAW. And that DAW was FL Studio 21, which is the opposite of beginner friendly.
When I was making bisexual lizard girls I can't even say how many times I had to restart cause I'd accidentally
delete everything LOL I have no idea how. Theres like 12 versions of this song lost forever.
Aside from that, overall I think this album is very... early sounding. Many stardew valley samples. Maybe you'd
think it's made with some experience (I'd think that) but there are GLARING issues.
Issue #1: I seemed to be afraid of more than 3 things going on for most of the album. This leads to songs feeling
considerably empty and bare-bones, which contributes to the amateur quality of the album. I will say that for
so few patterns the songs do feel more full than you would think if you just look at the project files.
Issue #2: I essentially did NO mastering. Like maybe tyhere were attempts but I can barely call them attempts.
There is an INCREDIBLE lack of compressors in EVERY song. Maybe it's because I've leaned into favoring the usage
of a lot of compreossors (which leads to it's own problems, addressed later) but it makes tracks feel considerably
more lifeless which is definitely something I never go for.
Issue #3: A very loose understanding of scales and chords leads to many notes feeling off/out of place. I feel like
you can really hear it in webbed fingers, I HATE the baseline for that song and I would definitely make a
comletely different bassline even a month after releasing this album.
It may seem like I'm really ragging on Hi, but overall I think it holds up well (to me). A lot of beginner mistakes
make the songs seem less concrete and more loose, sometimes diverting from the expectations of what a track will be.
For example, in flying school I make plenty of bold choices I don't think I'd make currently. I admire that about
music that comes earlier in a discography. In fact it's often these kind of songs I like the most (probably why I made
the in the first place, eh?).
My favorite track is definitely repeater. It's the first song where I break into some amount of complexity, and I do
love the abrasiveness and volume I was somehow able to make with very little compressor usage. I also think the vocal
chops I used are very catchy and they get stuck in my head sometimes.
A quaint little first attempt at music. Good job mid-2024 me. (It was a year ago; not even).
